I am a man, and so I know that my opinions may be taken with a grain of salt on this subject, and that does not bother me. It’s a fair question. So before I comment, here are my qualifications to speak on the subject:

Never does a man have more power in a divorce than when he has no job. Think about it. It doesn’t matter whether you are a man or woman to think about it.

If the husband has no job—legitimately has no job:

- he can’t pay alimony.

- he can’t pay child support.

By the same token, if the wife does have a job, she can pay alimony. She can pay child support.

If a husband legitimately has no job, there’s no basis for ordering him to pay the marital debts.

- Husband’s time being worthless in a financial sense, and employed wife’s time having greater worth, husband can make a credible claim for being awarded at least joint physical custody, if not sole physical custody, of the parties’ minor children.
