Question: Are we still married?
I tried to get a copy of a divorce decree from my ex husband, but found out there is no decree, because it was never filed through the state. This has been over 20 years ago. Does this mean we are still married?
ANSWER: If the court never issued a decree of divorce or ordered your marriage dissolved in your divorce action, then yes, you are still married. A marriage cannot end by the couple wanting to be divorced, filing for divorce, and then separating for a long time. Without the court order dissolving the marriage, you are still married.
