Yes, kindness is perceived as weakness among lawyers in many ways. And there are circumstances where kindness (or what may be thought of as kindness) would be an inappropriate response (this observation by C.S. Lewis on the virtue of friendship applies equally to the virtue of kindness: “[It] makes good men better and bad men worse.”).
But is being truly kind (as opposed to being kind out of self-interest or pride) worth being perceived as weak in the legal profession? Yes. The sacrifices genuine kindness requires all people to make are worth making because they are the right thing to do.
